Bette Davis

 Plot Analysis

Aspiring actress Eve Harrington maneuvers her way into the lives of Broadway star Margo Channing, playwright Lloyd Richards and director Bill Sampson. This classic story of ambition and betrayal has become part of American folklore. Bette Davis claims to have based her character on the persona of film actress Talullah Bankhead. Davis' line "Fasten your seatbelts, it's going to be a bumpy night" is legendary, but, in fact, all of the film's dialog sparkles with equal brilliance.

Editorial Reviews
Amazon.com essential video
Showered with Oscars, this wonderfully bitchy (and witty) comedy written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz concerns an aging theater star(Bette Davis) whose life is being supplanted by a wolf-in-sheep's-clothing ingenue (Anne Baxter) whom she helped. This is a film for a viewer to take in like a box of chocolates, packed with scene-for-scene delights that make the entire story even better than it really is. The film also gives deviously talented actors such as George Sanders and Thelma Ritter a chance to speak dazzling lines; Davis bites into her role and never lets go. A classic from Mankiewicz, a legendary screenwriter and the brilliant director of
A Letter to Three Wives, The Barefoot Contessa, and Sleuth. --Tom Keogh

First of all, I would go anywhere to see Bette Davis in action.  She is one of the greatest actresses of all time.  The way she takes a role and makes it hers, not like any other version of the character.  Her life was always dedicated to her work with no distractions.  Smart, sexy, cunning, and mesmorizing are just some of the adjectives that describe her.   This is a must see film, if you have not had the privilege yet.

Davis's intensity is always apparent in her films and this is no exception.  The dialogue in this movie is some of the best spoken onscreen.  Today's actors seem so bland beside her.  She is a woman in full.

All About Eve is a 1950 movie drama written and directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, from the story The Wisdom of Eve, by Mary Orr.

Gary Merrill, George Sanders, Hugh Marlowe, Celeste Holm and Thelma Ritter also appear, and the film provided one of Marilyn Monroe's earliest important roles.

It was nominated for 14 Academy Awards and won six awards, including Best Picture. It has been selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry.
